What seems to be a common attitude among people these days is that (1) spirituality is a very, very important thing, but (2) I'm not sure whether or not "church" is an important thing. "Back in the day" we could just say, "Well of course church is important - the Bible tells me so!" Or if pressed for another answer we'd say, "The church is important because my parents told me so!" And if pressed beyond that, many of us were left with, "Well...the church is important.........Because!!"
We have to do better than that. The church - and the God we worship - deserves better than that. I absolutely believe in the importance of the church and living the life of faith connected to the church and active in the church. I don't believe the church is perfect, by any means. And I certainly don't make any assumptions that just because someone isn't "at church" they aren't a believer. But "why church?" I think there are all kinds of reasons, and I'd love to dialog about it.
The "Why Church?" class with Pastor Marty has been excellent, very educational and thought provoking. This is such a great topic that Calvary has brought up this fall.

Yancey says
"We should leave a worship service asking ourselves not 'what did I get out of it?', but rather "was God pleased with what happened.?"
